In August and September, our Events Director PIPPA LEITH is putting together a small series of Friday evening women-only circuit races. This is a personal project of hers and pilots a new concept which aims to build a race series FOR women, run (mostly) BY women. The driving force behind the idea is to offer something for everyone; competitive racing for those who want it, in a relaxed, welcoming and social environment for less confident competitors - who have recently started, or recently returned to racing - and want to develop their skills and confidence further.
If you are completely new to racing, we recommend that you do some skills training prior to entering. These are competitive events, not coached training sessions.
The series will be a collaboration between organiser and riders, with each event run by volunteers and helpers from the clubs & teams taking part.
Racing will start at 7.30pm to allow enough time for people commuting to the venue to get there.
These are short events, on Friday nights. We have the circuit entirely to ourselves and there are MANY bars nearby! Friends and family are all welcome. Creating a relaxed, social environment is the main driving force behind this idea. Think of it as a Girls' Night Out with a bike race!
Ranking points will be available to riders who are pursuing them (top ten overall) and prizes will be given to the top E12, 3rd and 4th category finishers.
Less experienced riders will be able to ride at their own pace, gaining confidence and improving fitness without pressure or intimidation. These races are suitable for riders with limited bunch racing experience*. If you're undecided please come along to watch and talk to other riders. All kit must be fully compliant with current BC regulations.
*we recommend that riders participate in race-ready skills training prior to racing on this, or any other circuit. Lee Valley is a short, fast circuit with tight corners and is therefore not suitable for riders with no previous experience or training.
Supporting clubs and teams are welcome to use these sessions to advertise their own events and recruit new members.
Most importantly, we need volunteers from all clubs and teams (male and female!) to help out with marshalling, sign-on, line judging/timing (training will be given) and First Aid. Helpers will all be given free membership for our Winter season road series and/or track track league.
Each week there will be ONE race, ensuring that full ranking points will be available.
Points will be awarded to the top ten overall.
Prizes/gifts will be given to the highest placed E12, 3rd and 4th category riders.
Sign-on will close at 7.10pm (late sign-on is NOT available)
Racing will begin at 7.30pm
Advance entry = £15
Entry on-the-day = £20
These events are not part of the GoRide programme. You need to have a FULL licence (with Gold or Silver British Cycling Membership) and some training or previous experience to participate.
Pre-entry can be purchased via the British Cycling website but will close 24hrs before each event. 48hrs notice is required if you wish to cancel your entry.
If you're able to help in any capacity please contact Pippa to let her know your availability. Thank you!
